Royal Niestern Sander is a 100% Dutch shipyard. We are a versatile, strong and modern yard. With over 100 years of knowledge and experience, Royal Niestern Sander can count itself among the best shipyards in the Northern Netherlands. We design, build, maintain and repair ships. Also, we are specialized in often complex customer-oriented ship conversions.

A versatile shipyard at a strategic location
The yard is located in the north of the Netherlands and has a direct connection to the North Sea. At our locations, various facilities are at your disposal, including two dry docks, a slipway, new building facilities and a well-equipped machine shop with a plasma cutting machine.
Our history
2005
Niesten Sander ceased to be a familiy company. The shares were acquired by Central Industry Group and Royal Wagenborg. In 2008 Wagenborg became there sole shareholder.

1980
Appingedam Niestern Delfzijl merged with Sander and the yard was named Niestern Sander BV. All companies possessed a huge amount of knowledge and specialisms.

1953
The brothers Sander left their location and had en entirely new yard built at the Eemshaven with modern facilities and huge dimensions.

1912
The shipyard moved to the Eemshaven that was both wide and deep. With this move a new name came: Scheepsbouwmij Farmsum. Ont he other side of the canal a new build yard was built.

2001
Niestern Sander BV existed 100 years. After all those years the yard had already written a lot of history. All the work done by the many generations of shipbuilders. From now on, the yard will continue under the name Royal Niestern Sander.

1970
The Niestern yard merged with the Apol yard, later called Werf Appingedam. A powerful and modern shipyard was created with the name Appingedam Niestern Delfzijl.

1927
The brothers Gerhardus and Jacob Sander started their shipbuilding activities in Delfzijl. The yard became known far and wide for the coasters it produced.

1901
Shipbuilder Berend Niestern and his sons chose the port of Delfzijl for their shipyard where they started to build steel ships.

EasyMax 4 ‘Alexia’ launched successfully
Today, the MV Alexia was launched successfully at our shipyard. This new building is the successor of the award-winning Egbert Wagenborg and her sisters Máxima and Amalia. The MV Alexia type is the fourth vessel in the EasyMax series in the Wagenborg fleet according to our new energy efficiency targets.
Mobilization pontoon marks start of Wagenborg's first decommissioning project
Today marks a significant milestone in the decommissioning of the G14B offshore platform located in the North Sea, as Wagenborg successfully started to mobilize the pontoon 'Wagenborg Barge 11' in her homeport Delfzijl for this task. This event is the first major step in fulfilling the recent decommissioning contract awarded by ENI to Wagenborg, highlighting the company's expertise and commitment to sustainable practices in the energy sector.
Shipyard Royal Niestern Sander awarded steel works for methanol conversion ‘Fugro Pioneer’
Royal Niestern Sander was awarded the steel work scope in the methanol conversion of the ‘Fugro Pioneer’. In December 2023, the multi-purpose survey vessel arrived at the shipyard’s dock location in the port of Delfzijl. In the upcoming weeks, the first steps will be made in the world’s first methanol conversion project.
